Instructions for applying for your SSN

As a designated BridgeUSA host, you agree to fulfill the following regulatory requirements:​

1. Structured Training (Not Labor): 

You must provide a structured training program (Form DS-7002) that offers specific learning objectives and skills acquisition. Participants cannot be used to fill ordinary employment positions or for unskilled labor.

2. Professional Supervision:

You must provide experienced supervisors who are physically present at the site of training to mentor the participant daily.

3. Financial Stipend: 

You are required to provide a stipend that is sufficient to cover the participant's living expenses in your city (estimated $2,000–$2,500/month).

4. Cultural Exchange:

You must offer meaningful cultural activities (e.g., American holiday celebrations, local outings) to ensure the participant experiences life in the U.S. beyond the workplace.

Evaluations & Cultural Exchange

Mandatory Evaluations:

You must complete a Mid-Point and Final Evaluation.

Cultural Activities:

Hosts are required to provide cultural exposure. See our list of approved activities.

Insurance & Emergency Procedures​

Medical Insurance:

VISTA provides compliant health insurance. You do not need to add participants to your company plan.

Hiring & Onboarding Steps"​

I-9 Verification:

J-1 participants are authorized to work only within the dates on their DS-2019 form. Download the I-9 Guide.

Social Security:

Participants must wait 10 days after validation to apply. www.ssa.gov

Payroll, Taxes & Stipends​

Tax Exemptions:

J-1 participants are generally exempt from FICA (Social Security) and FUTA taxes. Please provide this guide to your payroll department.

Stipends:

Minimum requirement: $2,000 - $2,500/month to cover living costs.
