Eligibility & Application

To be eligible, you must be a foreign national who is currently enrolled in and pursuing studies at a foreign degree- or certificate-granting post-secondary academic institution outside the United States, or who has graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to your exchange visitor program start date.

 

You should submit your application at least three months before your intended start date to allow sufficient time for processing and visa issuance.

 

The duration depends on your specific program category. The J-1 Intern program can last up to 12 months, while the J-1 Trainee program can last up to 18 months.

 

 Yes. You may apply for a J-2 Visa for your spouse or unmarried children under the age of 21. There is an additional application fee of $1,950 per dependent, which covers the issuance of their DS-2019 form and required insurance coverage.

 

Housing & Insurance

 Yes, but your DS-2019 form must be signed for travel validation by VISTA J-1 Exchange before you leave the U.S. Ensure your visa is still valid for re-entry.

 

 You must complete your program by the end date on your DS-2019 form. You have a 30-day “grace period” after this date to travel within the U.S. and prepare for departure. You cannot work during this grace period and must return to your home country before it expires.

 

Some participants may be required to return to their home country for a total of two years at the end of their exchange visitor program. This requirement ensures that you share the skills and knowledge you acquired in the U.S. with your home country.

Participant Obligations

You are required to participate in your internship program on a full-time basis. The U.S. Department of State defines this as 32 to 40 hours per week.

 

 No. You are strictly prohibited from engaging in any outside or unauthorized employment during your J-1 program. You are only permitted to train at the designated host company listed on your DS-7002 Training Plan.

 

Yes. Maintaining communication is a legal requirement of your visa. You must complete a monthly check-in with our team and submit mandatory mid-point and final evaluations within 72 hours of receipt.

 

If you change your U.S. living address, it is mandatory to report your new address to VISTA J-1 Exchange within 10 days. Failure to update your SEVIS record within this timeframe can jeopardize your visa status.

Costs, Financial Requirements, Payment & Refund

Certain fees are strictly non-refundable. The U.S. government Visa Application Fee ($185) is non-refundable even if your visa is denied. Administrative fees, such as the Change of Host Company fee ($1,100), are also non-refundable if your request is denied by VISTA J-1 Exchange.  The mandatory SEVIS Fee ($220) must be paid online before you attend your visa interview. The Visa Application Fee ($185) is paid when you schedule your appointment at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

 

Yes. The program fees cover your sponsorship and administrative costs. You are responsible for your roundtrip airfare (estimated at $1,500), housing, and daily living expenses. You must arrive in the U.S. with a minimum of $2,000 in personal funds to cover initial costs before your first stipend is paid.

 

 If you fail to adhere to the rules, regulations, and requirements set by VISTA J-1 Exchange, your program may be terminated prematurely. In this event, you will be required to return home immediately without any refund of your program fees.

 

The program sponsor fee is $1,560 for a 12-month program. This covers the review of your application, DS-2019 issuance, orientation, and ongoing monitoring and support.

 

Yes. You must pay the U.S. government SEVIS fee ($220) and the Visa Application fee ($185). Additionally, you are responsible for your roundtrip airfare (estimated at $1,500) and health insurance ($56–$89/month).

 

You must have access to at least $2,000 USD in personal funds upon arrival to cover immediate costs like housing deposits, food, and transportation until you receive your first stipend check.

 

Yes, most internships offer a stipend to help cover living expenses. The amount varies by host company and location but typically ranges from $2,000 to $2,500 per month.
