Living in the U.S. & NYC Survival Guide

Find Your Home in the U.S.

Securing housing is your responsibility, but we are here to help! In major cities like New York, expect to pay $800 – $1,500 for shared rentals and at least $2,000 for a private one-bedroom apartment. You will typically need one month’s rent for a security deposit.

Setting Up Your U.S. Bank Account

To open a U.S. bank account, you must wait at least 10 days after arrival. You will need to bring your Passport (with J-1 Visa), DS-2019 Form, I-94 Form, Proof of Address (like a lease or utility bill), and your Social Security Number (SSN) or receipt of application.

Navigating Your Commute

If you are placed in the New York City area, public transportation is the fastest way to travel.

  • MTA (Subways & Buses): Download the official map at new.mta.info.

  • Regional Trains: Use the LIRR for Long Island, the PATH Train for New Jersey to Manhattan, and NJ Transit for broader New Jersey routes.

  • Driving: New York State allows international drivers to use foreign licenses, though carrying an International Driving Permit is highly recommended.

Staying Safe and Healthy

You are required to carry health insurance for your entire stay. In the event of a severe or life-threatening emergency, always dial 911 for immediate assistance
